Breaking A Bad Habit

A young elephant is tied to a sturdy post with a thick rope. It pulls and struggles for days but can't break free. Eventually, it gives up.As the elephant grows into a massive adult, it is still tied with a simple rope to a small stake. It could easily snap the rope with almost no effort, but it never tries. It believes escape is impossible because of what it learned when it was young.

Do you believe you can change?  If not, why?

How coaching can help:  Understand the thinking patterns that drive the behavior that seem to control you.

An elder tells a child:"Inside each of us are two wolves. One is driven by anger, envy, greed, and destructive habits. The other is driven by kindness, discipline, hope, and love. They are always fighting."The child asks, "Which wolf wins?"The elder replies, "The one you feed."

Do you know what is causing you to repeat your choices?

How coaching can help:  Understand the decisions you are making that feed the urges for the poor habit and make plans to subvert those.

Each morning a traveler crossed a field by taking the same winding dirt path. It was muddy, full of thorns, and slowed every journey, but it was familiar. One day the traveler noticed a straighter route through fresh grass. The first trip was difficult. Weeds scratched at the legs, and there was no clear trail. For many days, the old path tempted the traveler back. But each time the new route was chosen, the grass bent a little more. Eventually, the new path became smooth, while the old one slowly disappeared beneath wildflowers.

What do you need to break the pattern over and over?

How coaching can help:  Understand what you need before the point of decision comes and plan ahead of time.
